From the genius minds of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg ('Shaun of the Dead') comes a new alien movie - 'Paul'. Did we need a new alien movie? Yeah, we did. It's definitely time.
Every dork and scifinerd will enjoy this, but more importantly I think nearly everybody who lived through the years of E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc will enjoy it.
Seth Rogen plays the voice of Paul. I found the staging of the voice and the obvious green screen animations to be a bit distracting - the humans just don't interact with the alien convincingly enough. There are holes in what passes for a 'plot' that will drive hard core alien lovers a little nuts. So it's lightweight fare to be sure, only there is an inordinate amount of cussing and sexual jokes, so it's totally inappropriate for kids.
Sort of makes you wonder what demographic the movie was aiming for. I enjoyed it, just for the silliness aspect, and the bit of Klingon dialogue.
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. Saw Super Manger Shane and got some hot fresh popcorn to put under my sprinkle cheese :)
Gave this one a solid "3" - it was alot of fun.

Limitless
Limitless is a movie that outlines many of our greatest dreams come true.... Bradley Cooper finds a pill that makes him a genius. Not just an egghead genius, but expands his mind, allows him to think with total clarity, do extraordinary mental feats, make tons of money and pretty much have anything he wants. Nice, huh?
A friend referred to this as "Fight Club Lite". It sort of fits. And since Fight Club was a classic, it's actually a compliment.
It's such a thrill ride as his life changes. The direction by Neil Burger is great. Bradley Cooper is convincing and does a wonderful job as he transforms. Robert deNiro is a surprise - he has a great role as a big business tycoon - you're never quite sure which way he's moving. Solid performances by all, and a really fun ride.
I had to dial down my brain several times since a few things just don't make sense, but it's Hollywood and it's a good time.
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - great people and hot fresh popcorn!

Rango
Went to see 'Rango' with my daughter and her 5 year old, so we had a whole range of ages there. We really looked forward to seeing this, were very positive going in, and got the expectant wind knocked right out of us.
This was the longest 1 hour and 47 minutes in recent memory. A few days ago I actually ran for 1 hour and 48 minutes nonstop, and that went by faster and less painfully than this movie did.
None of us found the characters to be endearing, or even interesting. The animation is purposely grotesque, the story makes no sense, the pacing is slow and boring. We kept thinking what a waste for Johnny Depp to be doing *this*. It is an easy paycheck though, I guess, just doing the voiceover for an animated movie.
We didn't find this to be for kids, and not really for adults, so I don't know who it's aimed at. It just wasn't fun and wasn't enjoyable for any of us. We gave it a '2'.

The Fighter
We saw the trailer and weren't looking forward to seeing what hit us at first as a mediocre Rocky knock off movie. Earthdad is a huge fight fan but even so...
BUT I saw some coverage about the movie and all about how Mark Wahlberg worked for four years to make this - worked out - really boxed, etc etc and it drew me in. We decided to check it out.
Bottom line - first impressions sometimes ARE right.
Will Mark Wahlberg EVER change his expression or actually act in anything? That is the question. He's the same guy in every movie. Soft spoken, dropping his eyes, the real good guy who shines and always wins and gets the girl and ... zzzzzzzzzzzzz
No matter if he did work for 4 years on this, got in good shape, learned to box, etc - this movie is not about him. It is stolen by Christian Bale who plays his way too accurate crackhead loser brother. He is stunning - must have lost a ton of weight and he really pulls off the role. He's also really annoying and you get sick of him and want to not be around him after a short time, much like a real crackhead.
The movie is also depressing in alot of ways, and a very close examination of a really screwed up, dysfunctional family. There's an attempt at redemption along the way that really does not work. We're left truly disliking everybody on the screen by the time it's over. :P
During the end credits the real Micky and Dicky are shown.
I think this one gets a '4' for Christian Bale but a '2' for the rest.

True Grit
We normally avoid the theater during the holidays and this year was no exception - almost ridiculously so :( But thank you for the emails and Facebook pokes - yes I'm alive and yes we've been back to the movies and have a couple to share with you! :)
I heard they were remaking True Grit some time ago and was really unhappy about it. As a child I saw this movie and loved it - that's right - I saw myself in the role of Mattie Ross, of course, and it was one of the few westerns I truly enjoyed. The Duke was the star, it's a great story. Why mess with that success? I poo-pooed to anyone who would listen.
OH BOY am I eating those words. (not eating poo-poo, thankfully) What a great movie! Even without John Wayne, even without the original script, even even even. What a great remake.
The Coens (Ethan and Joel) did this (No Country for Old Men, O Brother Where Art Thou) and they did it right. First, they stuck to the original story without messing it up - good. They added much richer and more authentic dialogue from the book - very good. They cast with an amazing hand - Very very good. And they added that Coen magic touch - a bit more real, a bit more grisly, just a little truer and grittier.
I'm not a big Jeff Bridges fan and have not gotten on the bandwagon of his fairly recent success, but darn if he isn't really good as Rooster Cogburn. I didn't want to like him in this.... but I have no complaints of any kind. He did it right. He's more flawed and uglier and odder than John Wayne - and it really works.
The star of course is Hailee Steinfeld (there's a 't' in that one - not Seinfeld) who just runs away with the movie. She's superb as Mattie Ross.
Josh Brolin also stars in a hysterical half witted role that he plays to the tee :D
It's just a great movie. We gave it a "5".

Easy A
I snuck off to see this one alone, it's not earthdad's cup of tea and that's fine. I've been wanting to see it since it came out several weeks ago. It was definitely worth a look - what a good movie!
Emma Stone ('Superbad', 'Zombieland') stars as a nerdy, intelligent, quiet, wall flower girl who discovers that having a sexual reputation in high school gets you a lot of attention. She's a virgin but playing with the power of the grapevine and starts rumors about herself, at first for attention but later to help out others and earn a little cash. It's fun, it's ridiculous and it's great that we're in on the joke with her while watching the different reactions of her peers.
What's really great is watching this scheme grow - it gets complicated - it takes on a life of its own and it gets out of control. The levels the movie goes through are really interesting.
Intertwined so nicely with our current day story is the fact that her lit class is reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. We get a refresher on that story, the ostracizing of the 'bad' individual, and we see it played out in today's world. It's a great overlay of a classic with today.
- My only peeve is that our heroine ultimately uses the letter 'A' on her wardrobe to mimic The Scarlet Letter, while the 'A' stood for "adulterer" in the original story. Our high school girl is not an adulterer. But then I may be splitting hairs here... -
The story is a huge draw here, but Emma Stone is what carries the movie. She's just the perfect blend of dorky, smart, clever, cute, sexy - all of the above.
Major bright spots are the glimpses into her family life. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson play Mom and Dad and they are exquisite! The dialogue is the best this year since The Social Network, the attitudes are fun and happy and light. It's a strikingly refreshing take on parents and family life. I found myself wishing for more scenes with them!
Another big plus for the movie is the many nods to 80s movies and particularly to John Hughes. Lots of texture and content in this film - not fluff.
I gave this a '4'! Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. Popcorn was great - The theater was much fuller than I'd expected considering this has been in town now for 3 weeks or more, but then word gets around when it's a good one!

"RED" stands for "Retired - Extremely Dangerous" :) Of COURSE it does!
This is the story of a Black Ops team from years past who "get the band back together". They're older now but can still get the job done. It's pretty tongue in cheek, and overall really fun.
Mary-Louise Parker ('Weeds') is the only cast member who isn't in AARP. She gets dragged along (kidnapped) for the ride and gets to meet the former members of Frank Moses' team - played by Bruce Willis. The love story between these two is a stretch, but then so is Helen Mirren shooting a machine gun in the snow :)
Lots and lots of great actors show up - we were happy to see Ernest Borgnine - who is not only NOT dead but looks great; as well as Richard Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss plays a bad guy and does it with real relish. Hard to believe he can muster that up but he does a great job.
Morgan Freeman has a lovable role as Willis' best bud. Helen Mirren is just lovely - Martha Stewart by day and Rambo by night.
The plot itself isn't great, the story makes little sense but then who cares. You're not coming to watch a great caper unfold, it's all about the gang. Getting the band back together. The overall movie seems uneven, times when it drags or seems to have bits cut out that leave you wondering "huh?" but those pass and the action and the fun continue. It's not a hugely cerebral movie. But it is lots of fun.
We gave it a clear "3" for a good time. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, popcorn was hot and fresh, plenty of white cheddar sprinkle cheese and a beautiful, clean theater. Nice time at the movies!

Social Network

Jesse Eisenberg ('Zombieland') stars as the famous Mark Zuckerberg - a legend amongst geeks and the youngest billionaire in history. I have to add that he just has to be an Asperger person as well. If he's not, Jesse Eisenberg certainly played him to the tee as one!
This movie succeeds where no others before it have - it makes coding - actual computer programming - into an exciting lively event! The action (coding) scenes are breathtaking. At least I found them to be, but then I'm another geek. :)
We go back to 2003 when the whole thing began and see it's birth with great intensity, excitement, momentum and the best written dialogue ever. If you're not enthralled after the opening scene that lasts approx 10 minutes, maybe you should slip out and go down the hall to watch something else. For me the opening conversation is amazing and captivated me completely. I'm going to watch this whole movie again.
I realize somewhere deep in my mind that Zuckerberg is supposed to be coming off as the bad guy here.... at least that thought finally dawned on me several hours later when I was still thinking about the movie. But played by the incredible Jesse Eisenberg, all I felt for him throughout the movie was admiration. I was cheering for him to succeed on all levels. I admire genius and could only think that this guy is just amazing!
The pacing throughout the movie is excellent. Justin Timberlake shows up playing Sean Parker - the founder of Napster. His role is smooth, a little slimey and very worldly since he'd already been around the block (and lost it all). A very solid performance on all counts.
It would have been so easy for this movie to become a snoozer. Talking about code and servers and legalese, Zzzzz. Instead it's a fully entertaining story, exciting and interesting. It gives us a glimpse under the hood and into the world of creation and creativity and genius - and it's exhilarating.
I gave this a '4'. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. They were unfortunately having a Fail Whale Monday... computers acting up and everything slowed to a stop. After reminding the mgr at the concession stand that popcorn was not computer operated and we *could* just pay cash and get our food before we were late for the movie... they decided to let us do that. :) Sometimes you have to just go old school.

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps
The money may never sleep but I nearly did. Zzzzzzzzzz
What went wrong here? Michael Douglas is slimey enough. Snake-like, even. He talks about cancer 3 times with regard to the financial industry which now seems uncomfortably forshadowing since the man is battling cancer himself.
The performances were not the problem. Douglas - excellent. Shia LaBeouf - excellent (I'm a fan anyway tho) Josh Brolin - good enough. Carey Mulligan - eh. Susan Sarandon even shows up in a small bit and does a decent job.
The problem is the thing gets confusing - muttled - hard to follow. Then they slip in a small zinger of reality (how corrupt Wall Street really is) and then hurry and bury that again. The whole thing gets smothered in a romance/try to make up with daddy/bad guy becomes nice guy after all story. It seems like the whole financial thing wasn't that bad after all and the real people responsible get caught and punished so everything is okay now.

For an Oliver Stone movie this is horribly disappointing. Wall Street is a huge subject, one that affects all of us and is historically the most corrupt and outlandish thing to ever happen in the country. To push all of that aside with one sweep is really dropping the ball. Stone has no stones in this one, clearly.
I'm giving it a '2'. Less for the story but more for the performances and for what was attempted.

Devil
Devil is written by M.Night Shyamalan and may just be his last chance at redemption. I say he pulled it off.
This is Classic M.Night - think back to "Signs". Alot of the same themes and simplicity to it. He seems to be apologizing for Airbender and The Village and Lady in the Water, etc and hoping to remind us that he does have some good ideas and he can make a suspenseful film.
'Devil' has 5 people trapped in an elevator and one of them is .... the Devil? That's pretty much it. Interesting things happen along the way, there are twists and enough meat to keep you interested. Nothing real gross (it's PG-13) and nothing too shocking (you won't jump in your seat) and nothing too surprising but a well paced, well acted, interesting movie.
Now if he could just get back to where he was at "Sixth Sense" time.

The Expendables
I hesitated to go see this one, but agreed thinking it was really a gift to earthdad. This would be HIS man movie - I would endure it. I was wrong!
We both really enjoyed this movie. It's just great to see so much talent in one film. All of the actors do a wonderful job. Sly is back, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren..... OH and Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, did I mention Bruce Willis and Arnold (the Gov) Schwartzenegger himself (with one laugh out loud moment) ? All present and accounted for.
It's pretty much a man's movie with lots of guy stuff and tattoos and lots and lots of stuff blowing up, but I loved it. The plot is not complicated, the action is good, the movie moves right along. We do get back stories on everybody in our little group of heroes EXCEPT Terry Crews :( That part stood out and we wondered why. His part is still exceptional.
This is just a fun movie. We gave it a "3"

We both really enjoyed this movie. It's just great to see so much talent in one film. All of the actors do a wonderful job. Sly is back, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren..... OH and Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, did I mention Bruce Willis and Arnold (the Gov) Schwartzenegger himself (with one laugh out loud moment) ? All present and accounted for.
It's pretty much a man's movie with lots of guy stuff and tattoos and lots and lots of stuff blowing up, but I loved it. The plot is not complicated, the action is good, the movie moves right along. We do get back stories on everybody in our little group of heroes EXCEPT Terry Crews :( That part stood out and we wondered why. His part is still exceptional.
This is just a fun movie. We gave it a "3"
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - we got to see Super Manager Shane today which is always a pleasure. Popcorn was hot and fresh and everyone was friendly and moving quickly - great time at the movies!

Eat, Pray, Love
I slipped out of the heat and into Julia Robert's new movie, trying to expect nothing and keep an open mind.
The movie was made from the bestselling book of the same name by Elizabeth Gilbert. I didn't read the book, and felt that if I had I would have gotten more out of the movie. There seemed to be disconnections and things that were missing in the story. I found myself confused more than once over the character that Julia Roberts plays - why the major life meltdown over something that seems very small in the grand scheme of things? Many of her decisions seemed ridiculous and rambling as the film continues.
There is scenery from other countries that I found interesting - sort of like watching the Travel Channel. But there are so many contradictory and odd themes going on. The main character is looking for peace and joy but is depressing and sad and alone most of the time. Her main point seems to be that a woman doesn't need a man to be happy, yet she is unhappy without one and never successfully gets over that.
It drags along unevenly and I lost interest. I give this one a '2'.

The Other Guys
Will Ferrell's latest film is a spoof on cop movies, cop buddy movies to be more exact. Mark Wahlberg is his partner and they play two cops who are very different and forced to work together.
I've been looking forward to this one and have seen the trailers too many times, but can tell you one fact - there are scenes in the trailer that are NOT in the movie. I hate when they do that! For whatever reason lines are missing, scenes are cut, and some of the funny stuff we saw in the trailer is just not in the film.
That little irritating note aside, the movie is pretty funny. We laughed out loud over and over during the first third of it, but then it loses momentum, runs out of steam, seems to be ad libbed or unclear, and worst yet it actually starts to turn into a real cop buddy movie *gasp*. Weren't we just spoofing those?
Samuel L. Jackson and "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson are in this and they provide some of the best laughs hands down. It was fun seeing Samuel L. get his comedy on.
Most refreshing performance is seeing Michael Keaton again! He is great in this as the police captain ("Capt. Gene") and we wondered where he's been and why he doesn't have a much bigger part!
Overall this is fun and very silly. If you love Will Ferrell anyway it will be a Must See for you. I happen to like him in small doses so I don't automatically run to see something he's in.
The end credits have an oddly serious series of true financial facts about fraud and theft and money. It was interesting to stay and watch them (and we did) but also weird and didn't fit in with such a screwball comedy movie.
We gave this one a "3" for fun. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, popcorn was hot and fresh and excellent!
Small side rant - people, why do you insist on sitting right next to other people in a movie theater?? I know, I've ranted about this here before, but have to do it again. This happens often to us and it's a crazy phenomenon. If we go into an empty theater and sit anywhere, someone will come and sit RIGHT NEXT TO US. Either directly behind or in front of us or right next to us in the same row. In a movie theater with NO OTHER PEOPLE!! It drives us nuts. Is it your herd instinct, sheeple? We like to sit away from others - we tend to make snarky comments to each other during a movie plus we just don't like people frankly, and when the theater is mostly empty it should be quite easy to have a buffer zone, but it's not!
Yesterday it happened again at the movies. No more than 30 people at the whole showing and you guessed it, most of them were right next to us. We have gone so far as to come in early and sit in the middle, where we don't want to be, let people trickle in and pack all around us and then when the trailers begin we get up and move to our real seats that we like, with no one around. It works well if we do it late enough before the feature begins.
I drove into the post office parking lot one day when it was totally empty - not one car there - and parked in a space. Before I could get my door open another car zipped into the lot and pulled into The Space RIGHT NEXT TO ME, and so close I could hardly get my door open!! With the entire LOT empty all around us! Are you kidding me??
Do we just have to be crammed together constantly?

The Kids Are All Right
When we went to see 'Dinner for Schmucks' we talked with Super Manager Shane and he raved about 'The Kids Are All Right' We decided immediately we had to come back to see it, when frankly we should have traded in our tickets on the spot! These two movies don't even compare and Shane was right!
What an amazing job everyone does in this film! The acting is just incredible - you would swear the scenes are real and you're spying on some of the most private and personal moments of these people's lives. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore star as a lesbian couple with 2 children in their teens who decide to track down their sperm donor. He enters their family and becomes a catalyst.
Mark Ruffalo is the sperm donor who starts sparks flying. He is very natural and very real - it just can't be said enough how genuine everyone seems. The dialogue feels true, the feelings and issues and events - what a good movie.
One warning - this movie is rated R and there's plenty of sex to justify that rating. All kinds - woman to woman, man to man, man to woman.... :) It's all there. There's also quite a bit of frank sexual talk. If you're disturbed by that, be forewarned and don't go.
We walked out behind a group of 5 old ladies who were loudly discussing the movie. They were very upset by the sex and thought it was out of line and out of place. One of the women reminded the others that it was rated 'R'. The others said it didn't matter, 'R' didn't mean that kind of stuff! :) If you agree with them, this is not your movie! (They did however all agree that Mark Ruffalo was cute and worth seeing - lol)
We both really enjoyed this movie. It's fun, totally entertaining, and intriguing. We gave it a '4'. I've already heard buzz about Oscar nominations for Annette Bening and Julianne Moore and they would be well deserved!

Dinner for Schmucks
Silly silly silly schtuff - beginning to end!
Steve Carell (The Office) and Paul Rudd (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) star in this .... is farce the word? We have definitely left the realm of reality behind only minutes into this film and it takes off on wings of its own from there.
Paul Rudd wants a promotion. His last obstacle to getting the promotion is to attend a "Dinner for Schmucks", a very cruel event that his boss holds each month whereby each exec brings along an idiot and the others secretly make fun of them, laughing at how ridiculous they are, and awarding one of them the biggest idiot of the night. It's really mean. Guess who Paul Rudd brings? If you guess Steve Carell you just won a stuffed mouse! Carell's character makes adorable dioramas of dead mice, stuffed and dressed up in real world scenarios. They are supposed to be ridiculous but I have to say, many of them were really adorable! :)
Steve Carell is very funny and completely ridiculous. If you're a fan already you will love him in this.
Another oddball character is Zach Galifianakis (from The Hangover) - we loved his weirdo mind control persona.
Overall this movie is alot like eating candy. It's delicious, tasty, but really not much actual substance. A lot of silly laughs and a good way to pass a very hot summer day. We had fun at this one.

Salt
Girl Power! :) A big budget action packed thriller, no punches are pulled and no holds barred, and the hero is female! That's refreshing to say the least!
Well, it IS a PG-13 so there are quite a few punches and language and naughty bits that are pulled, but that's refreshing.
Angelina Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy and claims she is being setup, which puts her on the run and into a whole LOT of action sequences! Who is telling the truth? Who is the good guy? Who is the bad guy?
This movie was originally written for Tom Cruise to star in and when I think it over I realize it absolutely looks like something he would do, but something that's already been done. It would have been a bit of a yawner if he were the star. They had to make very few modifications to let Jolie step in, which is great because the action survived. Same daring stunts, same life threatening emergencies - one after the other. They didn't dumb down the action for a girl star, in other words. That's what makes this an interesting movie. With her in the lead it has so much more variation, she's vulnerable, scared, weak and then BAM she packs the same whallop any man would.
There aren't many women who could handle this role but she does it with grace and totally commands the screen. Considering how tiny she is that's amazing. I'm not always a fan of hers, but I really liked this one. There are good twists and turns and lots and lots of action.
(I caught a glimpse of Andre Braugher as Sec. of Defense - a very small role and surprising to see him so briefly!)
Disclaimer is that this is clearly a Big Studio Hollywood movie, with numerous times that force you to shut off your brain or just not ask those questions, so you do have to sit back for the ride and just go with it. If you can do that it's a good movie. It was fun and a real good time at the movies.

Inception
Shutter Island meets The Matrix
That's what this movie tries really really hard to be but I would have given anything to have sat through either of those movies today (again) instead of this one.
On its own it doesn't really stand. It's muddy, very confusing, with the most annoying constant 2 chord LOUD pulsating pounding score to MAKE SURE WE KNOW THERE IS SUSPENSE.
I think that Leonardo DiCaprio liked the psychological thriller aspect of Shutter Island, the Hitchcock feel and decided to just do another one as close to that one as possible. Ellen Page stars in this with him ('Juno') and she's very good although I never could get past thinking that she's about 12 years old.
There's a solid kernel of an interesting idea in the script - about dreams and layers and some interesting stuff. But somehow it gets buried in same old same old action stuff, lots and lots of shaky cam (the way to fake your way out of any bad movie scene, just shake the camera so the audience has to fill in the gaps in their brains and they believe they saw a MUCH better scene than you actually gave them). And the biggest downfall - it tries way too hard to sound alot smarter than it is overall. The end result is confusing, goes on too long, convoluted, we don't really care about anybody in this thing, kind of film.
What struck me as an observation in the theater was how much sheer movement there was. earthdad and I watched at least 3 people leave (not to return) and lots more that came and went. I guess they figured it was a good time to go out and check their messages in the hallway, or get something to eat. At 148 cruel minutes, nearly everyone took at least one potty break and I think they found out when they got back that they didn't really miss much and their seat buddies couldn't really tell them what was going on.
I'm being very hard on this movie because the bottom line is that it's simply not enjoyable. I resent films that purposely leave you totally in the dark at the start, forcing you to watch something you care nothing about and can't make heads nor tails of just because they can do that to you. I know those film makers believe they're doing a neat slight of hand and that the end justifies the muddy beginning and they are striving for that "OH I GET IT!" thing with the twist ending and the inspiration for many after movie conversations and even better, people who HAVE to go back and see it again to now make sense out of the early nonsensical parts.
This one does that and more - it seems to go on for 30 or 40 minutes of just jibberish. That's enough to make anyone restless and most of us feeling a bit impatient - I paid to see this thing, don't hold me hostage in misery just because you can.
Earthdad kept hoping if he fell asleep he'd wake up in a better movie. I found myself hoping for the same.
It's frustrating because the images and graphics are interesting and new, the idea is good, it's just not a well made movie. Definitely not fun. Prepare to go when you're in a serious mood and willing to hang on each word and every scene for 148 nonstop grinding minutes to puzzle out the whole thing.
We did see Super Manager Shane, always a pleasure, and the piping hot freshly popped popcorn was very good (with the sprinkle cheese of course!) so no complaints there. Just a let down feeling since I thought this was going to be a great movie.

Toy Story 3
Went to Toy Story 3 with my daughter and her little guy.
Toy Story is a much beloved franchise, with gorgeous graphics and always a heart warming story. This one is that and more. The story is nice, toys are fun, images even more gorgeous than ever before. Our own complaint was that it went on for what we thought was too long (and the restlessness of the little people in the theater reinforced that feeling) and seemed to repeat itself in many scenes.
Other than that this is nice, feel good, fun movie with some neat updated characters. You can't ask for much more in the summer from an animated film.

Knight and Day
Not being a huge Tom Cruise fan, I usually go along to his latest big screen blockbusters just because. This one I was lukewarm about going to see, but earthdad wanted to go and it was 100 degrees out so sitting in the dark in the theater sounded great. Off we went.
Cameron Diaz stars with Cruise and after seeing the trailers you pretty much think you know what this movie will be about - same old guy saving girl riding on the motorcycle and shooting bad guys and okay, what's new?
Shockingly, there is a lot that really is new going on! We were surprised over and over with some fresh takes on the old shoot em up thriller. It's fun, it's cute, the stunts are really good, it was just a fun movie. We laughed and we really enjoyed it. Fun summer stuff, that's for sure.
We give it a '3'. Definitely entertaining!

Shockingly, there is a lot that really is new going on! We were surprised over and over with some fresh takes on the old shoot em up thriller. It's fun, it's cute, the stunts are really good, it was just a fun movie. We laughed and we really enjoyed it. Fun summer stuff, that's for sure.
We give it a '3'. Definitely entertaining!
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, popcorn was hot and fresh - just a great escape afternoon at the movies!

Splice
What a wild, weird ride!
Splice alternates between a campy ridiculous, laughable farce and a creepy almost decent sci fi horror flick. If nothing it's pretty darn original and will leave you with some interesting discussions afterward!
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star, and pretty much that's it. Most scenes are just them with the experiment that they create. They do everything except yell out "It's Alive! Bwahahahahahaha!" with the same passion of other mad scientists, and of course things go horribly awry. Nothing ever really works out like you want it to when you're splicing genes and messing around with Mother Nature, huh?
Warning to young people - lots of sex and blood and weird stuff in this and not for kids. That warning just made every adult WANT to go, huh?
I have to say it held our interest, gave us plenty of time during the lulls for silly comments, and was a GREAT place to hide out today from the nearly 100 degree heat! A good popcorn muncher.
Super Manager Shane was working hard with a smile and we were happy to see him today. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - looked great, friendly folks and easy to get in and out of. Fresh hot popcorn served up with sprinkle cheese and real butter! A good day at the movies.
