Along Came Polly
This movie came out awhile ago but we didn't see it in the first run theater. We went to the Picture Show at Citadel Crossing in Colorado Springs, which is the second run theater. It's $1 to see movies there, and on Tuesday it's only .50! Can't beat that!
We are really happy to see "the dollar show" reopen. I wish oh wish that someone would use one of the beautiful old theaters in Pueblo to open a dollar show. The only thing we didn't think through is that it's Spring Break, and where else would every person in town be heading but to the .50 movie? Yes it was packed! We got there 15 minutes early though, got great seats and then watched the entire theater fill up. It was sold out!!
Our daughters, Sarah (15) and Rachel (almost 19) went with us. They laughed about the non-stadium seating in this older theater (boy have we all gotten spoiled!), but it was clean and redecorated and the whole place looks great.
Along Came Polly stars Ben Stiller (Starsky and Hutch, Zoolander) and Jennifer Aniston (Friends on tv, also Office Space, a favorite). I related to the free spirit, ditzsy sort of person that Jennifer Aniston plays, and I related to the uptight risk analyst that Ben Stiller plays. Yes I am a Libra and we have a full range of those qualities on any given day. But like a Libra, the challenge to our characters is to find Balance. The whole movie is them striving to do just that.
A negative thing in this movie is that they showed so many of the scenes in the trailers on tv. Most of the best lines and best scenes you've already seen, so the movie feels in spots like you're watching a movie you already saw. Besides that, this is a silly, fun movie. We laughed out loud many times. Ben Stiller is, as always, so funny. He is not afraid to look ridiculous. There are plenty of silly situations but also sexual ones. It was a bit uncomfortable in spots to watch with the kids, even though they're teens. It may be an awkward one for a first date, and I wouldn't recommend taking kids any younger than mine.
Debra Messing (Will and Grace) is a smaller part, and she does a very good job with it. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Ben's best friend - that's a name you may not know but you do know this actor. He was in Cold Mountain, The Talented Mr. Ripley, many other movies. Here he plays a spoiled adult who was a child actor. His character is unpleasant and he's quite unlikeable - but on purpose. We thought it was an interesting and somewhat fresh perspective.
All in all this was just a fun evening. We went in the middle of the week - always fun to do. As we were leaving the theater there was a fellow standing in the hallway who worked for the theater (or maybe owned it?) thanking each of us for coming. That was a *very* nice touch. I will go back to that theater as soon as I can.
Rating - 3 - FUN! The popcorn was fresh and the night was great.
