"Get your paws off of me you damn dirty ape!" We were saying this line for days in preparation to see the new movie, and YAY - the line makes it into this version! :)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - yes, it is time. The star of the remake is the CGI motion capture technology - and it rocks! The apes are wonderful. Good thing, because the humans... not so much. I normally like James Franco but boy he's flat in this starring role. They should have let an ape play him.
John Lithgow is his usual wonderful self as the aging father. He's always great to see.
There is also a snippet of the original - look fast but you see Charlton Heston! That was fun.
If you saw the series decades ago you know the basic story - it's presented here with some changes but the basic theme that the apes rise up is still intact. The action is very good, the visuals of the apes is amazing (and Oscar quality) and the story moves along well. We really enjoyed this. Gave it a "4".
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - Monica quickly served us up hot fresh Reddanbacher popcorn and sprinkle cheese and it was a nice day to duck out of the heat and into a good movie.

Mr. Popper's Penguins
I popped in out of the 100+ degree heat to check this out and I must admit, it was the lure of AC and the screen full of ice and cold and penguins that sold me more than Jim Carrey or anything else.
Mr. Popper's Penguins is a pleasant enough movie. It doesn't make a bit of sense, it has some cute penguins and a few Jim Carrey lines that will make you smile. Nothing offensive here.
For my money, Mr. Popper's assistant Pippi (played by Ophelia Lovibond) stole the screen. I adored her use of the letter "P" peppered through her presentation.
I went alone so I may have had a better opinion of the movie had I taken a little person with me. There were approximately 30 people in the theater and most of those were of the small variety. I heard many giggles and laughs from those little ones so it seemed to be well accepted.
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. The big poppers made popped popcorn that was pungent and pretty and pleasantly plump!
I gave it a '2' but was happy to be out of the heat.

Super 8
Super 8 = Super GREAT! What a movie!
We gave this a "5" - just wanted to say that up front! This is vintage wonderful Spielberg at his best! Think ET meets Stand By Me... and another one. Don't want to spoil anything. It spares no expense with phenomenal effects and visuals - the "production value" is intense.
This movie has it all - it's interesting on a human level - there are no less than 5 storylines going on all at once but it's not complicated or convoluted - they all work. They just add layers and create the 'real world' feel.
The action is fabulous, the pacing is great - the stories are interesting and the humor is ever present and sprinkled throughout.
There are many nods to little inside jokes - I know I want to see this again and hope to catch more of those along the way. Anyone living through the 70s will pick up on several right away that are neatly tucked in. I couldn't help but think that one of the main kids featured just had to be Spielberg himself when he was a kid, with his obsession for films. The characters are very genuine.
Stay after the credits - there's more to see that you won't want to miss.
What a great movie! We loved it. A "5"!
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - Caleb cheerfully sold us our tickets, Renn made sure we got hot fresh, Orville Reddenbacker popcorn (and sprinkle cheese) from the lovely new big poppers. Everyone was great - wonderful movie experience!

Scream 4
Campy stupid fun. That's the only way to describe a Scream movie. And since we've seen the other 3, what the heck. :)
You won't go because you want to be scared, and you won't go for great acting or amazing visuals. It's just your basic silly slasher film - light on the slashing. It does more introspection on what makes a horror movie work (the "rules" of horror movies) and is very funny, even at times it's not intending to be.
We had fun with this. Go with someone you can laugh with and sit far enough away from everybody else so you can make comments outloud and predict how it will end. And don't pay very much to see it. Then you'll have fun.
A "3"

Soul Surfer
This will be a very short review. The story behind Soul Surfer of Bethany Hamilton, the surfer who got attacked by a shark, lost an arm, and went back to surfing (and won a National Championship) is truly inspiring and amazing and worthy of all praise. The movie about that experience unfortunately plays like a tv movie of the week.
It has good actors, a gorgeous setting in Hawaii and does a good job of showing her positivity and allowing us to feel what she struggled with after the attack. The dialogue is pretty flat and the movie has a rushed feel to it. The visuals are beautiful, it's very interesting to watch a surf competition if you've never seen one (I haven't) and I do admire Bethany.
I believe young girls will love this as it does give a good message of hope and staying positive, and being a good sport even when others are mean spirited.
This one gets a '2'. I saw it in Walsenberg, CO at the Youth Theater (lost a bet), which is a small, very old, apparently family run theater. Good experience overall.

Source Code
Jake Gyllenhaul stars in this thriller - and right off I'm not a big Jake G fan. I went in spite of him, rather than because of him. His costars are Michelle Monoghan and Vera Farmiga - AH - Vera Farmiga is from 'Up in the Air' - that wonderful movie last year with George Clooney and the team that went around laying people off. (A Must See - if you haven't already) She is fabulous - got an Oscar nom for Up in the Air and did an equally great job in 'Source Code'.
This is a SciFi movie with several layers. None of it is convoluted or hard to grasp, and it moves along at a great pace and with intensive interest. I found every minute of this one to capture my attention. It raises many questions about science (and as Marge Simpson says to Homer when he confesses he had them deep fry his shirt at the fair, "I said you SHOULDN'T, not that they COULDN'T) Should we do certain things simply because we CAN?
Source Code is a sort of part Groundhog Day (without the tedium) and part Quantum Leap (without cutie Scott Bakula). It takes place on a commuter train going into Chicago (which my sister rides every day and I thought of her throughout). The train is about to explode and one man is 'placed' sort of 'quantumly' into a passenger's body just before the explosion. With that kind of set up it's Ready, Set, GO and we're off. This is a good movie - see it.
It's rated PG-13, nothing offensive or naughty, well paced, directed beautifully by Duncan Jones. I don't always note the director but for some movies it's clear that direction is one of the stars of the show, and this is one of those.
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. Super Manager Shane was working extra hard and doing a great job - always nice to go there.
We give Source Code a '4'.

My Run - the Terry Hitchcock Story
This is a documentary made 11 years after the event - when Terry Hitchcock apparently "ran" (walked) what the marketing says is "75 marathons in 75 days" but what amounted to 28 miles in 8 or more hours per day, which comes out to walking for 8 hours a day. He started in Minnesota, wanting to do some kind of publicity gimmick and remembered the real life hero, Terry Fox, who was a young man with bone cancer who ran across Canada to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Terry Fox had only one leg, due to the cancer. And unfortunately the cancer spread into his lungs and he was unable to continue his run. He died. But he raised over $24 million. Now that is a real true hero story if I ever heard one. Not the same with this Terry Hitchcock version.
Everyone seems to think it's very inspiring and heroic, so I should probably just stay quiet but I didn't see it that way at all. After such a long detailed bit in the movie describing the poor wife and what she had to go through with Breast Cancer, and her death, it would be logical for something like this to be done to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer. Instead, it appears that Terry had such a hard time raising his kids without her that he felt so sorry for himself and wanted to find a publicity gimmick to 'raise awareness for single parents' :\
That's pretty much a fail. Not all single parents are in need, or poverty stricken, nor need any awareness raised. Only those who think "poor me" as Terry obviously did. Why wouldn't you know what size pants your 5 year old wears? Come on now. Was he that goofy and out of the daily goings on with his own family?
He hadn't ever run before, was fat, on blood pressure meds, and had a heart attack a couple of weeks before he started. But he had the marketing/ PR machine in high gear and decided to go forward. He decided to run to Atlanta, where there was a TON of reporters and LOTS of publicity to be had.
We're very dramatically shown time and time again how he "nearly died" trying to complete this foolhardy stunt. Putting himself and his health at risk was silly. It showed that he didn't care if his 3 children were left with no parents. Why not gamble with his own life? Sure - why not. And putting his kids in the position of total responsiblity for him day in and day out during the run, tending to HIM, taking care of HIM, making sure HIS socks got changed 15 times per day - good grief - the ultimate in childlike and selfish behavior.
This is the story of a man who craved the spotlight, number one. Acted like a spoiled brat when he wasn't center stage (yelling at his son, throwing bananas, being an ass). Put himself and his children at risk for NO REASON AT ALL. And where is the foundation? I've googled it and don't see what foundation was started, or how much money was raised or what did that foundation ever do for anybody (besides Terry Hitchcock) ?
Not only the details of the foundation are missing - even more stunning is there are no details of the end result. No "Amazingly Terry lost 45 pounds during the 75 days, his blood pressure is normal and he no longer needed medication" etc. Statistics like that would be great to hear. In the movie when he got to Atlanta he appeared very much the same weight, which simply cannot be if he really did the walking/jogging that he says he did.
He does admit "Well, after the Run, I found myself in a hospital for three months nursing the fractures and the mental stress of the actual Run." That's a huge statement. 3 months for mental stress? One wonders - why? Who paid for it? What kind of breakdown did he have? And if it was such a heroic and wonderful experience, what intense mental stress would happen as a result of it?
My other criticism involves his many stops at radio stations and schools to do publicity. He is filmed saying to the microphone and to kids "I'm running from Minnesota to Atlanta, Georgia" only.... he's not. If I were one of the kids I'd answer "No you're not, you're standing here in our classroom talking!" Dean Karnazes is at this moment Running Across America. When he talks to press it's by phone (while he's running) or on an few minute break - AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. Why? Because that's where he is. They have to come to him because he's out there running!
Another inspirational story is Marshall Ulrich - he ran across America at the age of 57. He has a book coming out "Running on Empty" this month and shares his many stories as an ultramarathon runner and adventurer. I believe his stories to be more authentic and real than this movie was.
I found this to be a waste of my time, certainly not inspirational. It was very sad.

The Lincoln Lawyer
Wow - what a staggering waste of talent. I guess the economy really is that bad. I can just hear the meeting at the studio where they said "Let's be on the really safe side... get every celebrity you can round up, pull a script out of the 80s that went over pretty well and let's all just go through the motions and stay afloat."
So they did. Everyone did as they were told, and this thing came out.
I'll never get those couple of hours back.
It was almost worth admission just to watch wonderful talent like William Macy and Marissa Tomei (with new teeth?) and Bryan Cranston (wow, he must have just had a few minutes to kill on the way to his set at Breaking Bad and offered to jump in for a few scenes) and John Leguizamo try to breathe a little life into the most cliche dialogue ever. Almost.
It was almost worth admission to see Trace Adkins as a tough biker. Almost.
There are a few interesting twists, but nothing you won't see coming. There are a few good courtroom scenes, but nothing you haven't seen before. This was a yawner and a real waste of big resources. I'm glad I went to the matinee - at least it was cheap. Gets a "2".
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - saw Super Manager Shane working hard and doing a great job. Fresh hot popcorn and sprinkle cheese helped to ease the disappointment of this movie!
Can't wait for .... "THOR"!

Paul
From the genius minds of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg ('Shaun of the Dead') comes a new alien movie - 'Paul'. Did we need a new alien movie? Yeah, we did. It's definitely time.
Every dork and scifinerd will enjoy this, but more importantly I think nearly everybody who lived through the years of E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc will enjoy it.
Seth Rogen plays the voice of Paul. I found the staging of the voice and the obvious green screen animations to be a bit distracting - the humans just don't interact with the alien convincingly enough. There are holes in what passes for a 'plot' that will drive hard core alien lovers a little nuts. So it's lightweight fare to be sure, only there is an inordinate amount of cussing and sexual jokes, so it's totally inappropriate for kids.
Sort of makes you wonder what demographic the movie was aiming for. I enjoyed it, just for the silliness aspect, and the bit of Klingon dialogue.
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. Saw Super Manger Shane and got some hot fresh popcorn to put under my sprinkle cheese :)
Gave this one a solid "3" - it was alot of fun.

Limitless

Limitless is a movie that outlines many of our greatest dreams come true.... Bradley Cooper finds a pill that makes him a genius. Not just an egghead genius, but expands his mind, allows him to think with total clarity, do extraordinary mental feats, make tons of money and pretty much have anything he wants. Nice, huh?
A friend referred to this as "Fight Club Lite". It sort of fits. And since Fight Club was a classic, it's actually a compliment.
It's such a thrill ride as his life changes. The direction by Neil Burger is great. Bradley Cooper is convincing and does a wonderful job as he transforms. Robert deNiro is a surprise - he has a great role as a big business tycoon - you're never quite sure which way he's moving. Solid performances by all, and a really fun ride.
I had to dial down my brain several times since a few things just don't make sense, but it's Hollywood and it's a good time.
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - great people and hot fresh popcorn!
Gave this one a "4".

Rango
Went to see 'Rango' with my daughter and her 5 year old, so we had a whole range of ages there. We really looked forward to seeing this, were very positive going in, and got the expectant wind knocked right out of us.
This was the longest 1 hour and 47 minutes in recent memory. A few days ago I actually ran for 1 hour and 48 minutes nonstop, and that went by faster and less painfully than this movie did.
None of us found the characters to be endearing, or even interesting. The animation is purposely grotesque, the story makes no sense, the pacing is slow and boring. We kept thinking what a waste for Johnny Depp to be doing *this*. It is an easy paycheck though, I guess, just doing the voiceover for an animated movie.
We didn't find this to be for kids, and not really for adults, so I don't know who it's aimed at. It just wasn't fun and wasn't enjoyable for any of us. We gave it a '2'.

Red
"RED" stands for "Retired - Extremely Dangerous" :) Of COURSE it does!
This is the story of a Black Ops team from years past who "get the band back together". They're older now but can still get the job done. It's pretty tongue in cheek, and overall really fun.
Mary-Louise Parker ('Weeds') is the only cast member who isn't in AARP. She gets dragged along (kidnapped) for the ride and gets to meet the former members of Frank Moses' team - played by Bruce Willis. The love story between these two is a stretch, but then so is Helen Mirren shooting a machine gun in the snow :)
Lots and lots of great actors show up - we were happy to see Ernest Borgnine - who is not only NOT dead but looks great; as well as Richard Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss plays a bad guy and does it with real relish. Hard to believe he can muster that up but he does a great job.
Morgan Freeman has a lovable role as Willis' best bud. Helen Mirren is just lovely - Martha Stewart by day and Rambo by night.
The plot itself isn't great, the story makes little sense but then who cares. You're not coming to watch a great caper unfold, it's all about the gang. Getting the band back together. The overall movie seems uneven, times when it drags or seems to have bits cut out that leave you wondering "huh?" but those pass and the action and the fun continue. It's not a hugely cerebral movie. But it is lots of fun.
We gave it a clear "3" for a good time. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, popcorn was hot and fresh, plenty of white cheddar sprinkle cheese and a beautiful, clean theater. Nice time at the movies!

Social Network
*click*

Jesse Eisenberg ('Zombieland') stars as the famous Mark Zuckerberg - a legend amongst geeks and the youngest billionaire in history. I have to add that he just has to be an Asperger person as well. If he's not, Jesse Eisenberg certainly played him to the tee as one!
This movie succeeds where no others before it have - it makes coding - actual computer programming - into an exciting lively event! The action (coding) scenes are breathtaking. At least I found them to be, but then I'm another geek. :)
We go back to 2003 when the whole thing began and see it's birth with great intensity, excitement, momentum and the best written dialogue ever. If you're not enthralled after the opening scene that lasts approx 10 minutes, maybe you should slip out and go down the hall to watch something else. For me the opening conversation is amazing and captivated me completely. I'm going to watch this whole movie again.
I realize somewhere deep in my mind that Zuckerberg is supposed to be coming off as the bad guy here.... at least that thought finally dawned on me several hours later when I was still thinking about the movie. But played by the incredible Jesse Eisenberg, all I felt for him throughout the movie was admiration. I was cheering for him to succeed on all levels. I admire genius and could only think that this guy is just amazing!
The pacing throughout the movie is excellent. Justin Timberlake shows up playing Sean Parker - the founder of Napster. His role is smooth, a little slimey and very worldly since he'd already been around the block (and lost it all). A very solid performance on all counts.
It would have been so easy for this movie to become a snoozer. Talking about code and servers and legalese, Zzzzz. Instead it's a fully entertaining story, exciting and interesting. It gives us a glimpse under the hood and into the world of creation and creativity and genius - and it's exhilarating.
I gave this a '4'. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place. They were unfortunately having a Fail Whale Monday... computers acting up and everything slowed to a stop. After reminding the mgr at the concession stand that popcorn was not computer operated and we *could* just pay cash and get our food before we were late for the movie... they decided to let us do that. :) Sometimes you have to just go old school.

The Other Guys
Will Ferrell's latest film is a spoof on cop movies, cop buddy movies to be more exact. Mark Wahlberg is his partner and they play two cops who are very different and forced to work together.
I've been looking forward to this one and have seen the trailers too many times, but can tell you one fact - there are scenes in the trailer that are NOT in the movie. I hate when they do that! For whatever reason lines are missing, scenes are cut, and some of the funny stuff we saw in the trailer is just not in the film.
That little irritating note aside, the movie is pretty funny. We laughed out loud over and over during the first third of it, but then it loses momentum, runs out of steam, seems to be ad libbed or unclear, and worst yet it actually starts to turn into a real cop buddy movie *gasp*. Weren't we just spoofing those?
Samuel L. Jackson and "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson are in this and they provide some of the best laughs hands down. It was fun seeing Samuel L. get his comedy on.
Most refreshing performance is seeing Michael Keaton again! He is great in this as the police captain ("Capt. Gene") and we wondered where he's been and why he doesn't have a much bigger part!
Overall this is fun and very silly. If you love Will Ferrell anyway it will be a Must See for you. I happen to like him in small doses so I don't automatically run to see something he's in.
The end credits have an oddly serious series of true financial facts about fraud and theft and money. It was interesting to stay and watch them (and we did) but also weird and didn't fit in with such a screwball comedy movie.
We gave this one a "3" for fun. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, popcorn was hot and fresh and excellent!
Small side rant - people, why do you insist on sitting right next to other people in a movie theater?? I know, I've ranted about this here before, but have to do it again. This happens often to us and it's a crazy phenomenon. If we go into an empty theater and sit anywhere, someone will come and sit RIGHT NEXT TO US. Either directly behind or in front of us or right next to us in the same row. In a movie theater with NO OTHER PEOPLE!! It drives us nuts. Is it your herd instinct, sheeple? We like to sit away from others - we tend to make snarky comments to each other during a movie plus we just don't like people frankly, and when the theater is mostly empty it should be quite easy to have a buffer zone, but it's not!
Yesterday it happened again at the movies. No more than 30 people at the whole showing and you guessed it, most of them were right next to us. We have gone so far as to come in early and sit in the middle, where we don't want to be, let people trickle in and pack all around us and then when the trailers begin we get up and move to our real seats that we like, with no one around. It works well if we do it late enough before the feature begins.
I drove into the post office parking lot one day when it was totally empty - not one car there - and parked in a space. Before I could get my door open another car zipped into the lot and pulled into The Space RIGHT NEXT TO ME, and so close I could hardly get my door open!! With the entire LOT empty all around us! Are you kidding me??
Do we just have to be crammed together constantly?
Okay, rant off for now. I will never understand people.

The Kids Are All Right
When we went to see 'Dinner for Schmucks' we talked with Super Manager Shane and he raved about 'The Kids Are All Right' We decided immediately we had to come back to see it, when frankly we should have traded in our tickets on the spot! These two movies don't even compare and Shane was right!
What an amazing job everyone does in this film! The acting is just incredible - you would swear the scenes are real and you're spying on some of the most private and personal moments of these people's lives. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore star as a lesbian couple with 2 children in their teens who decide to track down their sperm donor. He enters their family and becomes a catalyst.
Mark Ruffalo is the sperm donor who starts sparks flying. He is very natural and very real - it just can't be said enough how genuine everyone seems. The dialogue feels true, the feelings and issues and events - what a good movie.
One warning - this movie is rated R and there's plenty of sex to justify that rating. All kinds - woman to woman, man to man, man to woman.... :) It's all there. There's also quite a bit of frank sexual talk. If you're disturbed by that, be forewarned and don't go.
We walked out behind a group of 5 old ladies who were loudly discussing the movie. They were very upset by the sex and thought it was out of line and out of place. One of the women reminded the others that it was rated 'R'. The others said it didn't matter, 'R' didn't mean that kind of stuff! :) If you agree with them, this is not your movie! (They did however all agree that Mark Ruffalo was cute and worth seeing - lol)
We both really enjoyed this movie. It's fun, totally entertaining, and intriguing. We gave it a '4'. I've already heard buzz about Oscar nominations for Annette Bening and Julianne Moore and they would be well deserved!
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, the popcorn was fresh and hot with plenty of sprinkle cheese. Sam sold us our tickets with a big smile and nice word and set the tone for a great time at the movies!

Salt
Girl Power! :) A big budget action packed thriller, no punches are pulled and no holds barred, and the hero is female! That's refreshing to say the least!
Well, it IS a PG-13 so there are quite a few punches and language and naughty bits that are pulled, but that's refreshing.
Angelina Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy and claims she is being setup, which puts her on the run and into a whole LOT of action sequences! Who is telling the truth? Who is the good guy? Who is the bad guy?
This movie was originally written for Tom Cruise to star in and when I think it over I realize it absolutely looks like something he would do, but something that's already been done. It would have been a bit of a yawner if he were the star. They had to make very few modifications to let Jolie step in, which is great because the action survived. Same daring stunts, same life threatening emergencies - one after the other. They didn't dumb down the action for a girl star, in other words. That's what makes this an interesting movie. With her in the lead it has so much more variation, she's vulnerable, scared, weak and then BAM she packs the same whallop any man would.
There aren't many women who could handle this role but she does it with grace and totally commands the screen. Considering how tiny she is that's amazing. I'm not always a fan of hers, but I really liked this one. There are good twists and turns and lots and lots of action.
(I caught a glimpse of Andre Braugher as Sec. of Defense - a very small role and surprising to see him so briefly!)
Disclaimer is that this is clearly a Big Studio Hollywood movie, with numerous times that force you to shut off your brain or just not ask those questions, so you do have to sit back for the ride and just go with it. If you can do that it's a good movie. It was fun and a real good time at the movies.

Knight and Day
Not being a huge Tom Cruise fan, I usually go along to his latest big screen blockbusters just because. This one I was lukewarm about going to see, but earthdad wanted to go and it was 100 degrees out so sitting in the dark in the theater sounded great. Off we went.
Cameron Diaz stars with Cruise and after seeing the trailers you pretty much think you know what this movie will be about - same old guy saving girl riding on the motorcycle and shooting bad guys and okay, what's new?
Shockingly, there is a lot that really is new going on! We were surprised over and over with some fresh takes on the old shoot em up thriller. It's fun, it's cute, the stunts are really good, it was just a fun movie. We laughed and we really enjoyed it. Fun summer stuff, that's for sure.
We give it a '3'. Definitely entertaining!

Splice
What a wild, weird ride!
Splice alternates between a campy ridiculous, laughable farce and a creepy almost decent sci fi horror flick. If nothing it's pretty darn original and will leave you with some interesting discussions afterward!
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star, and pretty much that's it. Most scenes are just them with the experiment that they create. They do everything except yell out "It's Alive! Bwahahahahahaha!" with the same passion of other mad scientists, and of course things go horribly awry. Nothing ever really works out like you want it to when you're splicing genes and messing around with Mother Nature, huh?
Warning to young people - lots of sex and blood and weird stuff in this and not for kids. That warning just made every adult WANT to go, huh?
I have to say it held our interest, gave us plenty of time during the lulls for silly comments, and was a GREAT place to hide out today from the nearly 100 degree heat! A good popcorn muncher.
Super Manager Shane was working hard with a smile and we were happy to see him today. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - looked great, friendly folks and easy to get in and out of. Fresh hot popcorn served up with sprinkle cheese and real butter! A good day at the movies.
We give it a "3".

Robin Hood
We went with this one question begging to be answered "Why did they remake Robin Hood AGAIN?" There are over 50 feature films of this legend. What will director Ridley Scott bring to this new one?
Apparently, not much.
I like to be up front with my prejudices and here are two - we don't like medieval movies usually and we especially don't like Russell Crowe. That said, Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves has to be my favorite of all the Robin Hood movies. Alan Rickman is mainly the reason for that - what a spectaular villain!
But I digress...
If you love movies of this era and/or if you love Russell Crowe, you will most likely revel in every moment of this film. It is huge and broad and sweeping, no cost seems to have been spared to make it more historically accurate than others. The fight scenes are enormous and bring to life the true pain and suffering of war, not war of these days but the gritty, hand to hand, in the dirt kind of wars that were fought then.
Russell Crowe seems to be trying so hard to be so humble, so noble, so pure and honest that he just falls flat. Who wants a one note hero? I think the best heroes of all time are those that are multi-dimensional. The flawed heroes. They have issues like we all do but they rise above and come out on top when the chips are down. That's a real hero! This Robin Hood is purer than pure and borrrring.
Cate Blanchett really shines as Marion. She seemed very authentic, intense, strong, but still vulnerable. A very nice role for her and she handles it very well.
All in all we were wishing we had gone to see Ironman2 again. :) I have admiration for the time, effort and intense work that went into this movie so it can't be dissed totally or set aside. It just wasn't that enjoyable for us.
One irritating thing - it appears to be setting up a new franchise with this being the "How It All Began" movie. If the money shows up at the box office I have no doubt there will be another and another to come. That's why the film drags and milks this prequel story, I think.
We gave it a '2'. Pueblo Tinseltown was the place, popcorn was hot and fresh and served up with a smile by Erin.

The Losers
Finally a movie with a PERFECT name! Wow is this one a loser.
Disclaimer - if you're a male between possibly 9 and 12, or a stoner dude with less than 5 brain cells left, you may think this one is COOOOL.
It's made from a comic, and that's a shame because many of my favorite movies ever are made from comics. This one just seems like a real bad comic. One dimensional characters and something blowing up every 10 seconds. It's also like a string of really poorly shot music videos, that use bad music. In between those there are a few lines of dialogue that try REALLY HARD to be funny and stylish and then back to things blowing up.
It was truly boring. Midway through we realized we couldn't care less what happened, would gladly walk out without giving it another thought, and if it were on tv (where it belonged... about 15 years ago) we would change the channel. Every cliche in the book is in this - the action is as old as it gets.
We were so disappointed, mainly because of Idris Elba being one of the stars - he starred in 'The Wire', HBO's runaway hit and amazing show. This man was amazing in that role but this one..... not so much. He did the best he could with a big pile of hot mess.
I'm holding my finger and thumb up in the position of an 'L' against my forehead right now. Yep, LOSERS!
Pueblo Tinseltown was the place - still running smoothly - I saw Super Manager Shane and got some good popcorn so it wasn't a total waste! Too bad all the movies can't be good ones. ;) This one gets a '2'.
