Raising Helen

Kate Hudson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) is as she always is - cute and smiley and a little ditzy. She is just as good as she ever is, but I had one complaint. In my book a light comedy should never have main characters die and deal with children dealing with death. This one does just that - as did the Ben Affleck bleah movie - Jersey Girl that came out earlier this year. It should either be a comedy or a drama, and seeing kids lose their parents isn't light summer fare.

That said, all of the kids do a good job - particularly Abagail Breslin (Signs) who is just an unbelievably skilled small child. She is fun to watch. But my real reason for going was because, as already confessed on this blog, I'm a Joan Cusack (School of Rock ) fan from way back. She is wonderful in this movie - she shows what skill and acting are all about and she is just Joan. No one can be Joan Cusack.

The other stand out character is Sakina Jaffrey - who we havent't seen before. She plays the neighbor who has kids and is very CAPABLE. She helps out Kate Hudson's character with examples of how to be a good mom. One of my favorite lines this year is uttered by her "I'm a fixer - I once got an oil stain out of silk" :) She's great.

All in all we gave this one a 3 - Overall it was fun and mostly because of Joan. Popcorn was fresh and delish! Pueblo Tinseltown was the theater!
