Spiderman 2
I forgot to write this review - which tells you something - and now can't remember the day we saw it. It was the first day it came out. We were pretty much looking forward to it. We both read Spiderman comics as kids, and we loved the first Spiderman. We agreed walking in but that's where it ends.
I must digress and add that I was pretty sick the day we went to this. I had a bad ear/jaw/tooth infection and was sleepy during this film. That can do alot toward how to view a movie, so my negativity MIGHT be coming from that place.
Robert loved this movie - more than the first one. I loved the scenes of Spidey going through the air and battling crime from the first movie, and there is so very little of that in this one! It's the reason we love Spiderman! Doctor Octopus - ho hum, who cares. I didn't like him, don't think he's a good villian and didn't care at all.
I have several other prejudices to admit to here - I do not like Tobey Maguire very much (although he was very good in Seabiscuit) and I don't like Kirstin Dunst one little bit (Mona Lisa Smile) She should be a villianous character in my book, and I don't feel sympathy for her or connect with her in this movie.
There is a great deal here about relationships, there are literally hundreds of shots of Tobey Maguire staring wide eyed with the same innocent look on his face as the world accuses him falsely, beats him up, does wrongful things to him as Peter Parker. It's overkill in my book. Get back to the superhero who is out there flying around from building to building saving people and looking amazing! :)
I just didn't like this movie. I thought it was way too touchy feely. Robert liked that aspect of it. If this story had been in one of my comic books, without the spidey fight scenes, I would have tossed it. It would never have made it into my collection.
I've heard from a couple friends who took little kids to see this - ages 2 to 6 - and they had to leave the theater with the kids because they were so squirmy. All that talking and relationships and inward struggle and so little Spiderman action scenes don't sit well with kids.
I gave it a 2, Robert gave it a 3. I don't remember the popcorn - honestly I wasn't eating very much that day.
