It had to be done - it had to be remade. This one is NOT a sequel. This one is a fresh start, trying to distance itself from the *other* Incredible Hulk movie that was a flat out disaster thanks to director Ang Lee. I always say, "You won't like me if I'm Ang Lee." He proved us all correct on that one. What a stinker.
So this time out of the gate the creators have alot to prove. They need to show that they can be true to a great comic book and a great tv show with a big following. This could be one of the best comic book to movie franchises yet, if they can do it right.
I grade this one pretty harsh because I was a fan of the comic and of the tv show. It has great promise, in part because Ed Norton (Fight Club) plays Bruce Banner! He's a good actor, surely he will do justice to Bill Bixby.
He does all that he can with what he's given. It's good, but just when the whole thing gets interesting - you know - just when he gets MAD, out the window the whole thing goes. We don't get The Hulk. We get a Saturday morning kid's tv cartoon Hulk on steroids. It's CG, CG, and more animated CG. I was so disappointed! It's silly, it's fake, it's a freakin cartoon set in the middle of a movie for God's sake!
As far as the cast goes, there's Liv Tyler (Jersey Girl, Lord of the Rings) as the girlfriend. She laments "Oh Bruce" about 400 times in the exact tone of voice with the exact facial expression. Boy you never get tired of that!
William Hurt looked good as the General and everyone else stood in the right places and said the right lines but Good Grief people - they inserted a cartoon Hulk into the movie! I was crushed.
There's a brief bit toward the end where they try to desperately attach The Hulk to Ironman's (successful and brilliant) coattails.
Overall I was just mad about the whole thing. Let down. Angry. You won't like me when I'm angry.
Gave this one a 1. Robert gave it a 3. He's much more forgiving than I am.
There are plenty of nods all around - Stan Lee does a cameo and watch for his name used in Stanley's. Bill Bixby is shown on tv, Lou Ferrigno even shows up for a little speaking part and boy does he look good! I would have liked to see him more and the cartoon Hulk less!
