Adventureland

This one was put on the back burner, and I think it's a sleeper that they have pretty much advertised wrongly. The trailer and ads led me to believe it was a raunchy, spit in your food, madcap stupid comedy and this time it's in an amusement park. Part of that is true, but it turned out to have more depth and heart than that.

This type of movie is called a "coming of age" movie, and that's appropriate. The lead male character is played by Jesse Einsenberg, someone I don't remember seeing before. He did a great job and I'm sure we'll be seeing him more. He's a very thoughtful, sensitive, overly intelligent young guy. Instead of the Ivy League summer abroad and plans to whisk off to college, family financial problems happen that force him to take a lousy summer job at an amusement park.

His love interest is Kristen Stewart ('Twilight'), who plays a deeply troubled young girl. She does a good job of it, but I was hoping for one brief glimpse of happiness out of her. Troubled is one thing but she appears to have just gotten the news about her dog dying only moments before each and every scene.

There are ups and downs, the most annoying part is the number of barf scenes - I think at least 3 or 4, with references to another 2. This is a trend and it seems every single comedy these days has to have plenty of throwing up in it. I don't think it's ever funny, and while sitting in a dark theater munching on popcorn it's the very last thing I want to watch. It's like the last gag out of the comedy writer's empty bag. They need to think a little harder and not resort to such a tired visual.

Overall this was a sensitive movie and I found myself actually caring about the characters, and relating to some. That's alot to be said for a silly comedy movie.

It has an 'R' rating. There is some drug use, some naughty bits language and references to sex, but not really graphic. Not for kids. Funny that it is *about* kids, but not for kids. That's the way it goes.

This one gets a '3'. Pueblo Tinseltown did a good job, popcorn was freshly popped!

Yeah, I was mislead a bit by the ads too. I was expecting a raunchy one with Bill Hader from SNL kicking butt and being outrageous throughout. He was woefully underused in this one.

The rest of the characters just seemed like downers. Especially Ryan Reynolds' character. What a loser. It's hard to care about people when they're just such conniving, bad people.

Kristen Stewart does what she does very well. She's got her own brand of acting like the smart-assy chick from Juno has her own brand. I like Kristen Stewart's a bit more. (but, truth be told, I want to strangle the other one).

A 3 seems right on though.
