Troy

First show at Pueblo Tinseltown on the opening day. Neither of us wanted to see this movie, but nothing else is playing that we hadn't seen. The only movie I've enjoyed Brad Pitt in was Fight Club which is a household favorite. I know I may get ex-ed out of the female club because I don't care for this guy, but there ya go.

If you adore big old epic movies that don't have much of anything to do with reality and have air brushed beauties playing real people - and if you adore lots and lots of battle scenes, endless clashing of swords against shields and millions of arrows and spears - then get to running toward a theater to see this movie!

Robert enjoyed the battle scenes. I wasn't in pain through this one, it pretty much held my interest but overall I didn't really care about anyone in it. It is amazing what men will do over their women. Even crazier than what a country will do to keep gasoline in their SUVs.

I didn't like Brad Pitt's character (but I already admitted to a prejudice about him). I think the stand out performances go to Peter O'Toole as the King of Troy and Eric Bana as Hector, the Prince of Troy. He is quite believable. He and O'Toole look like they're IN this thing, rather than playing a character in lots of pretty costumes and lots of odd props. Orlando Bloom has a role as the younger prince who is a lover, not a fighter (translation - a coward in war time). He does a good job in that role, it seems pretty natural. We liked him much better in Lord of the Rings.

Robert liked the Brad Pitt character - he thought Achilles would have made a great modern day serial killer. He kills as easily as breathing and he wants to die, has nothing to lose. That is a good point.

There is a great deal of CG for the crowd scenes and boat scenes and they're fun to see. The costumes are pretty. And there's a tiny bit of history in this - the Trojan horse comes into play for example, and the whole "how'd the Achilles heel get its name?" question gets answered.

The popcorn was fresh, the white cheddar sprinkle cheese was good. We ate too much of it. This movie is playing in like FOUR theaters right now, which only shows that there is NO competition this week (at all!) Round of applause to the studio execs who picked this weekend - that alone will make this movie successful.

Overall rating - 2.5
