Open Water

This movie is supposed to be based on a true story. A young yuppie couple go scuba diving and get left behind when the people running the boat miscount their customers. Since you know that premise, you now know the entire movie. You've already thought about the idea of it before you came to the theater, and you realize how scary that would be if it happened to you. This movie doesn't have anything else to tell you. Yes it is scary. It's terrifying. There is nothing they can do. So they do nothing. And you watch.

We watched the bemused and silent (small) crowd file out of the silent theater (there is no exit music or sound at all). We stood in the hallway afterward and chatted with our favorite theater guy, Travis, and enjoyed that more than we did the movie.

On the drive home we got to talking about the whole concept. Bobbing out there in open sea, no land in sight, absolutely helpless beyond imagination, those two people were truly right in the hand of God. There was nothing to do but believe and ask for mercy at that point. But that lead us to realizing that's not just the case when you're bobbing in the open sea or in a life and death situation. We are all in the hand of God every single moment of every single day, but we falsely believe we are in control of our lives or making our own decisions. We believe we are responsible for the direction our lives take, or if we're doing well or doing poorly. We worry, we fuss, we fret, we try to be the authors of our own goodness, but it all means nothing.

We are at the mercy of God for each breath that we draw. And we should be as humble and as grateful for each day, even when in our homes or feeling comfortable and not in harms way.

The movie - several unknowns doing a good job of being realistic. The gal, Blanchard Ryan, who we don't remember ever seeing before, was a good Charlize Theron lookalike. It was filmed fine, acted well, but just not a good movie. It did create several good conversations afterward, so it gets bumped up to an overall rating of : 2

1 year Travis - till you're outta here, huh? We'll check on you every week at the movies. ;)
