Wicker Park
The performances in this movie were fine - I'm not a Josh Hartnett fan really but everyone did their job. You could have selected another actor or actress for everyone in the movie and it would have come out the same, possible better depending on who you picked. They were interchangeable and not outstanding.
The star of the movie is the screenplay. And here's where it went wrong - there is a fine line between keeping your audience in suspense, but still getting them to care, be involved and go along for the ride - and simply holding your audience at arms length and forcing them to be in the dark until the end. Sixth Sense did the first of those two, Signs did the first of those two, a similar sort of "just missed you" love story that did it better was one a couple years ago at Christmas time.... geeez I can't think of the name but will later I'm sure..... Anyway it got us involved, we cared about the characters and we were entertained watching the movie. This one leaves you frustrated, trying to be patient and telling yourself "I guess it will become clear at the end".
There is a suspense that builds, but as we learn more I don't think we cheer for the lead characters to find each other. I found myself hoping they would not because they were unlikeable. Josh Hartnett's character is pining away over the lost love of his life, but he is hooked up and almost engaged to another woman and he hops into bed with a third. Hard to sell the "pining away" and "good guy" idea at that point.
Well, Zach served us up a nice hot, fresh bag of popcorn at Pueblo Tinseltown. Both of our minds wandered through this one - we simply didn't feel involved and were tired of the cat and mouse game with not giving us any information and confusing us over flashbacks.
The biggest thing it did for both of us was remind us WHY we left Chicago and WHY we do not ever wish to return! This movie is filmed when it is cold cold cold. One look at those white, frozen streets and you have to say Thank You God for bringing me to sunny Colorado! :)
We give this one a 2! Fugggitaboutit!
